Estou assumindo que isso é um problema de driver, mas não sei como resolver. O dispositivo não pode se conectar via wireless e não pode usar o Network Manager.

A opção mais descomplicada será a atualização para o Ubuntu 16.10 ou posterior. Se isso não for uma opção para você, o seguinte foi proposto para funcionar, mas não posso falar pessoalmente sobre o quão bem funciona.

Além disso, seu kernel pode não ter drivers compilados para esse adaptador. Para corrigir isso, você teria que recompilar seu kernel a partir do código-fonte, o que é uma tarefa não-trivial, mas também não é muito difícil, uma vez que você tenha aprendido. (É muito intensivo da CPU e levará algumas horas, provavelmente.) Quando você fizer a etapa "xconfig", precisará localizar o driver da placa e escolher a opção para compilá-la no kernel.
