UPS EATON / MGE 5E - o driver não funciona

Question

Estou no Ubuntu 16.04.2 em um Dell 7010 (i5-3570S) e possuo um EATON 5E 850i (antigo MGE). Eu li e tentei vários guias, incluindo todas as respostas aqui: Como configurar o UPC com conexão USB

Ao executar upsdrvctl start e ainda estou recebendo:

Driver failed to start (exit status=1)

Um problema é que, após a reinicialização, o no-break não é mais visto por lsusb . Preciso desconectar manualmente e reconectar o cabo USB e, em seguida, ele aparece.

Depois de alguns arranhões, o cabo USB ficou muito comprido: usei um cabo USB de 5m que funciona bem com uma impressora, mas neste caso a UPS falha quando há mais comunicação. Usando um cabo de 1m (*) funcionou bem e eu pude falar com o UPS com sucesso.

(*) Eu fiquei completamente paranóico e também adicionei um núcleo de ferrite no cabo ...
