Eu tentei instalar o criador do qt a partir da grade do aplicativo, do software-center e do gnome-software. Todos os 3 geraram um erro semelhante a este erro:

Este computador está executando o Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus.
Desculpe-me por não saber como adicionar código para todas essas linhas, parece que apenas deseja fazer uma linha, sinta-se à vontade para editar com o código corrigido.

O repositório aparentemente tem algo quebrado. No entanto, descobri que o arquivo .run do site link funciona sem problemas. Basta fazer o download, cd para Downloads no terminal e executar:
chmod +x qt-unified-linux*
./unified-linux... [tab to autocomplete filename]
Funciona sem falhas!
