Não é possível usar Wifi para Inspiron 1420 no Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS - Pedido de ajuda [duplicado]

Eu sou novo no Ubuntu e Linux, embora eu tenha tido alguma experiência com computadores em outras plataformas há alguns anos. Recentemente, limpei o Windows Vista de um antigo laptop Dell Inspiron que não uso mais e instalei o Ubuntu 14.04.3 Desktop (32 bits) nele. Se eu puder fazer isso funcionar tranquilamente, também pretendo converter meu laptop de trabalho diário. O problema é que o Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS não está reconhecendo o meu wireless (é um Broadcom 1390 que veio com o antigo Dell.) Eu tenho visto várias outras perguntas postadas sobre isso e tentei as soluções sugeridas em cerca de 10 delas, mas nenhuma tem trabalhou (alguns dos comandos do terminal retornam erros para links desatualizados, software não está mais presente na minha versão, etc.)
Alguns dos links fizeram referência a um script para coletar informações de rede no sistema para que outros possam me aconselhar como localizar e instalar os drivers de dispositivo corretos para minha placa sem fio mini-PCI. (Por favor, note que eu estou postando isso com o laptop antigo com um cabo Ethernet direto para o meu roteador. Em breve vou precisar mudar para wifi, portanto, este pedido). Após uma pesquisa adicional, eu encontrei uma solução que funcionou para mim derivada da resposta mais popular (por Luis Alvarado) para esta questão em instalando drivers sem fio da Broadcom .

Especificamente, eu fiz uma nova instalação do Ubuntu 14.04.3 Desktop para desfazer quaisquer erros em minhas tentativas anteriores sem sucesso de fazer meu trabalho sem fio funcionar. Em seguida, executei o seguinte código no terminal, conforme recomendado na Etapa 1:

lspci -nn -d 14e4:  

Isso me disse que o PCI ID da minha placa wireless era [14e4: 4311] (rev 01) . Examinando a tabela sem fio da Broadcom na etapa 3, vi que precisaria de firmware-b43-installer . Então no terminal, eu corri:

sudo apt-get update  

seguido por:

sudo update-pciids

como recomendado na Etapa 2. Descobri por tentativa e erro que eu tinha que executar o seguinte no terminal:

sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source  

como sugerido no final do Passo 1, embora eu não tenha instalado manualmente o pacote bcmwl-kernel-source .
Eu então corri o seguinte no terminal da Etapa 3:

sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer  

e depois desligue o computador e desconecte o cabo Ethernet do laptop. Depois de ligar o laptop e fazer o login no Ubuntu, o menu de rede detectou redes sem fio e eu consegui selecionar o meu próprio e fazer login nele com sucesso.
