Instalei o Ubuntu 14.04.2 em um velho notebok VAIO (MODELO PCG-5J2L). Ele tem um NIC Wi-Fi embutido, mas não funciona para o Windows nem o Ubuntu.
Eu desliguei. Eu comprei um cartão Wi-Fi TP Link TL-WN823N para usar conectividade wifi, mas também não funciona.
Eu li muitas páginas da web sobre como instalar novos drivers para a minha caixa Linux VAIO, porque eu li o ubuntu tem drivers antigos para este NIC USB wi-fi (módulo rtl8192cu):
Mas o meu pen drive USB TP Link TL-WN823N não funciona ainda. Eu não sou um especialista em linux.

O cartão Wi-Fi embutido é desligado pelo hardware. Quando eu ligá-lo, continua desligado. Alguma pista?
Primeiro, sugiro que você inclua na lista negra o driver do dispositivo interno. De um terminal:

Separe a ethernet, pois o Network Manager preferirá a conexão sem fio. Reinicie. O wireless USB está funcionando?

Não fique confuso com o ath9k_htc, eu também tenho o adaptador usb tl-wn721N que é baseado no chipset atheros. Estou usando o 14.04LTS com o seguinte kernel

Eu testei o patch do Pvaret também e ele também está funcionando como pretendido, exceto piscar o LED. Após o patch de Pvaret eu recebo o seguinte dirver

Neste momento, estou usando o driver corrigido do pvaret, que está dando um desempenho aceitável semelhante aos drivers do chipset Atheros (TL-WN721N) sem nenhuma conexão cair. O driver de kernel padrão do Realtek é muito lento e há instâncias de conexões de conexão muitas vezes e até mesmo a conexão automática não ajuda, temos que desconectar e reconectar para obter rede.
