Ubuntu “não pode ver em todo lugar” mais de 2GB de RAM

Eu tenho um notebook antigo (compaq NX 7300 - 32bit cpu) funcionando perfeitamente, mas muito lento. Tem 2GB Ram, eu tentei atualizar para 3GB com 2 diferentes SODIMM (1GB cada) tirado de um laptop quebrado.

Com ambos os SODIMM (diferentes marcas) eu tenho o mesmo resultado estranho: o BIOS vê o 3GB mas o Ubuntu (16.04) ainda diz 2 no livre e meminfo, mas o lshw pode ver o segundo módulo de memória. O BIOS é atualizado para a versão mais recente e não possui nenhuma opção de configuração de memória.

Você poderia me ajudar a entender?
