Estou tendo problemas gráficos com meu laptop e sempre o tive desde que o comprei. Até agora não encontrei solução para meus problemas.

Meus erros são com o Chrome, o Chromium, o Atom e o VLC. Os erros parecem ser acionados pela placa de vídeo da Intel, devido a algum bug ainda desconhecido.

É difícil explicar exatamente o que está acontecendo, mas em resumo.

Aplicativos como o Chrome / Chromium, Atom e VLC não podem ser abertos após um período não especificado de uso normal (navegando principalmente no FF).
Eu uso o Firefox como meu navegador principal. Após aproximadamente 10 min ou talvez 1h os outros aplicativos não vão abrir no meu laptop e travar.
Se eu reiniciar e abrir os aplicativos, eles funcionam bem e podem até funcionar por várias horas, e eu posso abrir o FF posteriormente. Se eles correm em paralelo, eles parecem funcionar.
Minha melhor descrição do problema é que quando eu uso o FF por um período de tempo indeterminado, os outros aplicativos não serão abertos ou executados. Se eu reiniciar, tudo volta ao normal e posso abrir os aplicativos novamente. É como se algo, em algum momento, desencadeasse no software que trava os outros aplicativos quando tento iniciá-los. Eu suspeito que está começando a ver o Youtube no FF, que impede que os outros aplicativos sejam iniciados.
Pode haver outros aplicativos afetados e não começarão, mas ainda não encontrei outros.

Isso persistiu por meses agora. Eu não tenho ideia do que fazer e não tenho certeza se posso fazer alguma coisa. É possível que o problema seja simplesmente a falta de suporte para este laptop em particular a partir de gráficos da Intel no Ubuntu?

E o Firefox é muito lento em geral. Ao rolar eu tenho lag. Surpreendentemente, se eu iniciar o Chrome (quando posso fazê-lo), ele deixará de funcionar enquanto o navegador Crome for executado em segundo plano (passivamente).

Qualquer sugestão seria muito bem-vinda.

Eu mesmo poderia ter encontrado a resposta. Algumas pesquisas no google finalmente me colocaram no caminho certo.

1) Eu acabei aqui: link que confirma que há um problema do Intel Skylake com o Chromium / Chrome finalmente.

2) Isso permite que a resolução do problema seja feita instalando uma atualização do kernel, pois eu nem sabia que o Ubuntu não está atualizado com versões de kernel pelo menos estáveis.

Para verificar sua versão atual do kernel, execute o seguinte:

uname -a
uname -r

Isto irá mostrar a versão do kernel. Para instalar o kernel estável mais recente para o Ubuntu 16.04, clique aqui: link

3) Eu também encontrei o que é um problema semelhante, muitos parecem ter com sua placa gráfica linux aqui: link

Para saber qual placa gráfica você executou todos ou qualquer um dos seguintes comandos

 glxinfo|grep vendor
 glxinfo|grep renderer
 sudo lspci|grep VGA

Neste ponto, a solução é executar diferentes kernels e experimentar soluções para a placa gráfica Skylake. Não tenho certeza se tudo funciona perfeito ainda, mas os recursos acima devem colocar qualquer um que tenha esse problema e não sabe por onde começar no caminho certo.
