Monitores duplos funcionam somente no Ubuntu 16.04.1 Gnome quando configurados para diferentes resoluções (AMD R9 380)

Question

Eu tenho uma configuração de monitor duplo DVI + HDMI com um AMD Radeon R9 380. Eu não posso usar os dois monitores na resolução máxima. Um monitor pode estar na resolução máxima e o outro deve ser algo diferente. Se eu configurá-los para a mesma resolução, uma das telas fica em branco, mas ainda parece estar recebendo um sinal porque não desliga.

A AMD não está funcionando bem com o Ubuntu 16.x. Sua melhor aposta hoje infelizmente é fazer o downgrade para 14.04 LTS (ainda há alguns anos de suporte) até o computador morrer e depois comprar um com melhor suporte de aceleração de hardware para o Ubuntu.
