Eu tive o mesmo problema com o mesmo adaptador. Funcionou um dia e não no seguinte. O que acontece se você digitar sudo modprobe ath9k ? Meu applet do gerenciador de rede acordou imediatamente e me conectou.

Se isso funcionar, você pode adicionar ath9k a /etc/modules para carregar o driver na inicialização.
