Como corrigir “o sistema de pacotes está quebrado” depois de atualizar para o 12.04?

Eu não consigo mais remover ou instalar nenhum software ou executar atualizações. Recebi esta mensagem de erro depois de atualizar para o 12.04:

Check if you are using third party repositories. If so disable them, since they are a common source of problems.
Furthermore run the following command in a Terminal: apt-get install -f

Sou um novo utilizador, por isso não tenho ideia do que fazer com esta mensagem de erro.

Experimente estes comandos para resolver:

 sudo apt-get install -f
 sudo apt-get update
