Atualmente, estou executando o 12.04 e procurando uma atualização para 13.10
Eu tentei pela primeira vez um usb de 64 bits inicializável e falhei. Com a mensagem dizendo
Kernel requires an x86-64 CPU but only detected an I686 CPU
Unable to boot please use a kernal appropriate for your CPU
tentou 32 bits e a mesma mensagem apareceu.
Isso se deve ao fato de meu laptop simplesmente diminuir a velocidade?
ou posso / devo mudar o kernal de alguma forma?

Eu acho que seu computador não pode executar o sistema de 64 bits. Tente a instalação de 32 bits.
O Ubuntu 13.10 parece ter uma instalação anterior de 64 Bits, portanto, os links para baixar o Ubuntu são 64 bits por padrão.
