Eu tive o mesmo problema (além de muitos outros) de ter o tema da Terra-Nascimento de 2011 para trabalhar no Ubuntu 16.04.
Altere os nomes dos caminhos do formato & lt; 16.04 para 16.04
O arquivo /usr/share/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth tinha caminhos antigos do Ubuntu 14.04 e teve que ser alterado para refletir o Ubuntu 16.04.
Certifique-se de que o seu contenha nomes de caminho como este:

Edite o arquivo /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash e adicione esta linha:

Transição suave para o GDM
Para permitir uma transição suave, você precisa desativar sua unidade do gerenciador de exibição, por exemplo,
systemctl disable gdm.service
Habilite a unidade DM-plymouth respectiva (unidades GDM, LXDM, SLiM fornecidas), por ex.
systemctl enable gdm-plymouth.service
Ativar depuração
Edite o arquivo /etc/default/grub e procure pela linha LINUX_DEFAULT:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash vt.handoff=7 kaslr"
e mude para isso:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="plymouth:debug splash vt.handoff=7 kaslr"
Note que plymouth:debug é o importante. Também splash é sempre necessário para invocar o plymouth.
Após a reinicialização, procure no arquivo /var/log/plymouth-debug.log e ele deve se parecer com isso:

Depois de executar qualquer uma das alterações acima, execute:
