Eu tenho um disco rígido que está funcionando sem problemas no Windows mas, desde algum tempo, demora muito (10 min) sendo detectado no Ubuntu 14.04.

Eu não sou especialista nisso, mas parece que o computador tenta várias vezes reconhecer o disco rígido, mas ele não é bem-sucedido.
Eu tentei mudar a porta usb mas tenho o mesmo comportamento
