Não é possível instalar nenhum driver nouveau da nVidia

Não consigo instalar nenhum driver da Nvidia por 3 dias agora. Saída de installer.log:

-> Kernel module compilation complete. ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This happens most frequently when this
kernel module was built against the wrong or improperly configured
kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs from the one used
to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as rivafb, nvidiafb,
or nouveau is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from
obtaining ownership of the NVIDIA graphics device(s), or NVIDIA GPU
installed in this system is not supported by this NVIDIA Linux
graphics driver release.

Eu pensei que era por causa do módulo nouveau, mas

lspci -nnk | grep -i vga -A3
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation G73M [Quadro NVS 300M] [10de:039a] (rev a1)
Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems G73M [Quadro NVS 300M] [1179:ff10]
    Kernel modules: nouveau
05:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection [8086:4222] (rev 02)
root@bonfire:/# lsmod | grep nou

Eu tenho certeza que esse driver estava trabalhando no kernel 2.6. Agora é 4.9.0-2-686-pae.
