A mais recente atualização do software base do Ubuntu parece ter corrigido o problema.
Sempre que executo uma atualização de software no Ubuntu 16.04 (Unity), vejo um erro. E só lista linux-image-extra-4.4.0-47-generic
nos detalhes.
Eu não sei como diagnosticar o problema, mas depois de um pouco de pesquisa eu consegui entrar sudo dpkg --configure -a
no terminal que resulta neste

linux-signed-image-generic depends on linux-image-extra-4.4.0-47-generic; however:
