Aconteceu comigo também tentar usar o gdm3 em vez disso, se você o tiver. Se você tem o gdm3, vá ao terminal e digite "sudo apt remove lightdm" e depois disso "sudo apt-get install lightdm".

Eu recentemente atualizei do Ubuntu 14.04 para o 16.04, após o qual o gerenciador de exibição parou de funcionar.
Assumindo que é devido aos sistemas init, tentei voltar ao upstart seguindo as instruções dadas nesta página:
