Bem, parece que finalmente consertei. Em vez de 16.04 iso eu baixei 14.04 e funcionou. O live usb começou perfeitamente e eu instalei o xubuntu com sucesso.
Eu tenho tentado instalar o Xubuntu 16.04 i386 em um netbook com um processador Intel Atom N270 2GB Ram e 250 GB HDD usando um pendrive. Atualmente estou usando o ElementaryOS, que instalei sem problemas, mas agora estou tentando com o Xubuntu e recebo o seguinte depois de obter a tela do Xubuntu no começo:
