Thermald? O objetivo é manter o computador frio ... o padrão é usar o sensor de temperatura da pele (que o meu não tinha, então eu o configurei para ver o sensor de temperatura da CPU). Você alimenta um valor e tenta mantê-lo a uma temperatura igual ou inferior a essa (mais ou menos, pode ultrapassar alguns graus se estiver aquecendo rapidamente).

Se você tem controle de ventilador da HP, isso provavelmente apenas aumentará o ventilador e consumirá mais energia. Mas se não tiver controle de ventoinha (ou você pode desabilitar o uso de controle de ventilação do thermald), ele usa modos de economia de energia da CPU e limitação, MUITO eficazmente.

Eu tinha um Dell ou dois onde eu poderia encontrar um ponto ideal com este software que os esfriaria em torno de 20 a 30 graus Celsius (na CPU, mas o case esfriava muito também). Se eu rodasse o CPUBurn, ele rodaria com uma velocidade de 50-60% ... mas se eu rodasse qualquer outra coisa que usasse 100% da CPU, ele rodaria a 90-100% de velocidade (e qualquer coisa abaixo de 100% do uso da CPU) funcionaria a 100% da velocidade). Eu estava usando este plugado (só queria que ele rodasse mais frio), mas isso tem que se traduzir em alguma economia de energia da bateria.
