Não é possível instalar o CUDA no Ubuntu devido ao Nouveau - como posso desabilitar / desinstalar?

Noto que às vezes tenho problemas estranhos no Nouveau na linha de comando.

Eu tentei desativar o Nouveau usando as instruções aqui , mas ainda assim recebo todos os problemas abaixo.

Tentando instalar o CUDA 7.5, recebo o seguinte:

Você precisa inicializar em um console para fazer isso.

1. Inicialize e segure a tecla Shift
2. Selecione o Ubuntu e pressione "E"
3. Adicione nouveau.modeset = 0 à parte inferior das configurações de inicialização
4. Pressione F10
5. A partir deste console, inclua nouveau a lista negra e reinstale seus pacotes nvidia. Tente usar os pacotes da nvidia como nvidia-361 - você pode procurar o 367 no PPA dos drivers. Qual cartão você está tentando suportar?

Alternativamente, você pode pressionar Ctrl + Alt + F1 para abrir um console e usar o comando sudo service lightdm stop para fazer o mesmo coisa, mas não tenho certeza se isso descarrega o módulo do kernel nouveau.
