Adicionar rota estática ao Ubuntu em um VPS Digital Ocean

Estou tentando adicionar uma rota estática a uma sub-rede remota a partir de um oceano digital vps (ubuntu 14.08), mas toda vez que eu executar o seguinte comando recebo o erro:

"RTNETLINK answers: Network is unreachable" 

meu ip público é X.X.X.X e o gateway e host remotos são Y.Y.Y.Y e Z.Z.Z.Z respectivamente.

# ip route add Z.Z.Z.Z via Y.Y.Y.Y

Eu acredito que o meu VPS tem uma configuração de rota padrão por digitalocean, mas eu tenho sido capaz de configurar uma rede VPN com o gateway remoto já não consigo pingar o host remoto Z.Z.Z.Z ou telnet para uma porta. Confirmei que a VPN está funcionando.

Eu uso o comando route para adicionar uma rota estática a um host ou rede específica:

# route add -host <destination IP address> gw <gateway IP address>
# route add <destination IP address> gw <gateway IP address>
