O problema foi resolvido. Depois de instalar o Ubuntu 14.04, instale o Ubuntu Restricted Packages do Ubuntu software center. A instalação bem-sucedida permite que o VLC seja instalado corretamente.

É possível definir um servidor de gateway de fallback? O sistema não pode passar do login do Ubuntu após a atualização
