Eu tentei conectar-me ao WiFi no meu laptop Dell Vostro, a distribuição é Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. O gerenciador de rede wicd mostra No wireless networks found.

Por que você instalou o Wicd em preferência ao Network Manager? Você removeu NM? Por favor, verifique qual driver está instalado:

lsmod | grep -e wl -e b43

E verifique se o bloco de disco rígido está resolvido:

rfkill list all

Quais mensagens são dadas se você tentar digitalizar?

sudo iwlist wlan0 scan

Substitua eth1 por wlan0 se essa for sua interface sem fio. Além disso, qual é a sua versão do kernel?

uname -r

Eu não tenho certeza se alguma solução é possível para os kernels antes de 3.13.

Você tem um kernel 3.5.0-xx. Pode ou não ser possível baixar e instalar este: link bem como o pacote dkms de pré-requisitos: link
