O GRUB falha ao carregar o Windows em “dual-boot” com o ubuntu

Acabei de instalar o Ubuntu de um DVD ao vivo no meu HD externo para experimentá-lo antes de usá-lo em dual boot com o windows 8. Eu apaguei o backup do Windows para liberar espaço para ele, mesmo que eu tenha o disco de recuperação obter o sistema de fábrica.

Situação:

se o HD externo estiver conectado na inicialização, recebo o GRUB correto, o que me permite escolher o sistema operacional, mas o Windows não pode carregar, ele diz "não é possível carregar a imagem" em / EndEntire.

se não estiver conectado, recebo um ambiente semelhante a um GRUB, mas não sei nada sobre isso. (A edição de linha mínima bash é suportada.)

O que posso fazer para recuperar pelo menos o Windows 8?

Desligue a inicialização segura, e o grub deve poder inicializar o Windows (bug 1091464)

Outro bug, 384633, tem o arquivo grub.cfg inicial usando os dispositivos errados (porque a mídia de instalação foi contada, fazendo com que o sdc fosse usado em vez de b etc.). Você pode consertar isso editando primeiro os comandos do grub (instruções na parte inferior da tela, alterando os dispositivos hd2 para hd1 etc e sdc para sdb. Após uma inicialização bem-sucedida do Ubuntu, executando:

sudo update-grub

deve corrigir o problema permanentemente.
