Dell Vostro 14 3446: Trackpad detectado como Mouse (ou outra coisa)

Por alguma razão, meu trackpad está sendo detectado como rato em toda a distro que eu tentei (Ubuntu 14.04, Linux Mint 17, CrunchBang, Salix), exceto Ubuntu 12.04. Aqui está a saída relevante de /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Alguma idéia de por que isso está acontecendo e como evitá-lo?

PS. Dell tem proporcionado algum tipo de motorista em ligação mas a instalação falha tanto no Ubuntu 12.04 como no 14.04 com esta mensagem:

Acontece que foi um bug no kernel, o kernel 3.13.0-37-generic parece resolvê-lo (pelo menos para este touchpad).
