Não é possível obter o PHP ou Pear mais recente no Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Estou tentando instalar o PEAR e outros componentes, mas obtendo o seguinte.

$ sudo apt-get install php5 libapache2-mod-php5 php5-mysql

Eu fiz as instruções encontradas aqui, para obter a configuração do PPA para o PHP 5.5 ... e não estou claro como proceder.

Depois de tentar a postagem sugerida nestes comentários:

$ sudo apt-get clean
$ sudo apt-get autoclean
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree       
Reading state information... Done
$ sudo apt-get -f install
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree       
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Certifique-se de ter executado sudo apt-get update antes de executar sudo apt-get install php5 libapache2-mod-php5 php5-mysql , porque ele atualizará as listas de pacotes para que o software mais recente possa ser instalado.
