Como posso fazer a conexão com fio à Internet funcionar em 12.04 LTS?

Parou de funcionar após a primeira atualização de software. Ficaria muito grato se alguém puder me ajudar a corrigir este problema.

Executando um Teste do Sistema somente para rede, os seguintes resultados foram obtidos:

Acho melhor baixar e compilar o código-fonte para o driver. Primeiro vamos pegar algo importante,

sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-generic

Agora baixamos, compilamos e instalamos o driver:

wget https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/backports/2013/10/18/backports-20131018.tar.gz 
tar xvfz backports-20131018.tar.gz
cd backports-20131018
make defconfig-alx
make
sudo make install

Agora, carregamos o módulo:

sudo rmmod alx
sudo modprobe alx

e, esperançosamente, sua ethernet deve começar a funcionar.
