Eu tenho uma nova instalação do Ubuntu 18.04, instalei o Slack, mas ele não mostra nenhum ícone no indicador da bandeja:

Eu tive o mesmo problema com todos os ícones de bandeja no Ubuntu 18.04.
O que funcionou para mim foi desativar a extensão appindicators do Ubuntu usando gnome-tweak-tool . Em seguida, executei sudo apt purge indicator-common em um shell, reativei appindicators do Ubuntu e reiniciei meu PC.
Todos os ícones da bandeja estão de volta!
