Eu tive o mesmo problema. O Steam funcionou após a execução:
sudo apt install libnvidia-gl-390:i386
Acabei de atualizar ontem para o Bionic Beaver e sempre que tento abrir o vapor, aparece rapidamente uma janela que diz "verificando a instalação" e nada acontece. Aqui está o que eu recebo quando tento abri-lo do terminal:

Eu já tentei desinstalar e reinstalar, reinicializar e excluir o cache de aplicativos, como este thread recomenda.
