Ubuntu 16.04.2 Terminais ficando presos

O problema é que às vezes quando eu abro um terminal e tento fazer qualquer comando (ls, ping, top, touch, etc), ele simplesmente trava. Também não responde a ctrl + c ou ctrl + z. Isso também acontece quando eu vou para o terminal ctrl + alt + f1. Qualquer dica seria apreciada. Eu não sei como reproduzir isso sob demanda.

Parece que acontece com mais frequência quando acordo o meu computador quando durmo. Eu ainda sou capaz de abrir aplicativos a partir do menu de busca, incluindo htop, mas não tenho certeza do que procurar lá. Tentei pesquisar outras pessoas com esse problema, mas não consegui descobrir a coisa certa para pesquisar.

Eu tenho esse problema há cerca de um ano e é uma daquelas coisas que é realmente frustrante quando acontece e estou motivado para corrigi-lo, mas ele dura apenas cerca de 2 minutos no máximo e depois desaparece por dias sem realmente ficar fixo. Eu costumo abrir um monte de terminais e, eventualmente, todos eles ganham vida ao mesmo tempo.
