Acabei fazendo uma reinstalação completa do Xubuntu e o problema foi corrigido. Estou assumindo que mexi com alguns arquivos que não deveria ter, mas não tenho certeza.
Eu tenho brincado com o Docky por cerca de 2 horas e falhei consistentemente em remover o ícone de âncora dele. Eu li várias páginas, todas me dizendo a mesma solução que é desabilitá-lo de gconf-editor . Eu tentei isso, bem como reinstalar o aplicativo várias vezes do terminal e do aplicativo de software. Eu tentei excluir todos os arquivos de configuração que eu encontrei (~ / .gconf, ~ / .local e ~ / .cache) e reinstalar a partir do terminal e do aplicativo de software.
Enquanto escrevia isto, corri sudo gconf-editor e a caixa não estava marcada. No entanto, gconf-editor ainda tinha a caixa marcada.
Mensagem no terminal quando tento editar a configuração de gconf-editor :

Perhaps the problem is that you attempted to use GConf from two machines at once, and ORBit still has its default configuration that prevents remote CORBA connections - put "ORBIIOPIPv4=1" in /etc/orbitrc. As always, check the user.* syslog for details on problems gconfd encountered. There can only be one gconfd per home directory, and it must own a lockfile in ~/.gconfd and also lockfiles in individual storage locations such as ~/.gconf

Observe que editá-lo em gconf-editor diz somente leitura e não consigo alterar nada. A mensagem acima aparece quando clico em uma configuração, mesmo que ela não mude.
