ERRO: Não é possível iniciar o servidor MySQL: mysqld: Não é possível ler o diretório '/etc/mysql/conf.d/' (Errcode: 13 - Permission denied)

Estou tentando instalar o mysql 5.7 no Ubuntu executando o sudo apt-get install mysql-server mas está dando erro:

ERROR: Unable to start MySQL server:
mysqld: Can't read dir of '/etc/mysql/conf.d/' (Errcode: 13 - Permission denied)
mysqld: [ERROR] Fatal error in defaults handling. Program aborted!

Once the problem is resolved, run apt-get --fix-broken install to retry.

Eu dei permissão para o arquivo especificado no erro usando chmod 777 , mas o erro ainda prevalece. O que eu posso fazer?
