Problema com a instalação do rvm

Eu tento instalar o rvm no Ubuntu 14.04.

$ \curl -L https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable --ruby

try downloading the signatures:

or if it fails:

    command curl -sSL https://rvm.io/mpapis.asc | gpg --import -

the key can be compared with:

    https://rvm.io/mpapis.asc
    https://keybase.io/mpapis

Eu então executo o que isso sugere:

gpg --keyserver hkp://keys.gnupg.net --recv-keys 409B6B1796C275462A1703113804BB82D39DC0E3

e, em seguida, execute novamente

Agora parece funcionar.

1. O que o problema significa e o que acontece quando executo o comando gpg que resolve o problema?

2. por que há \ na frente de curl ?
