Abra o arquivo de configuração personalizado do GDM:

Deve ter muitos comentários e, no final, ficar assim:

Você terá que adicionar algumas linhas em gui assim:

Você encontrará arquivos gtkrc nessas pastas:
/usr/share/themes/"Theme Name"/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
Basta substituir "Theme Name" pelo nome do tema que você deseja usar (sugiro que você acesse /usr/share/themes/
com o Nautilus para ver os nomes reais dos temas).
Eu não testei isso, mas deve funcionar. Não sei se você terá que reiniciar.
