Estou tentando configurar o rsyslog. Por fim, quero ter um arquivo de log de pacotes descartados, mas não consigo que o rsyslog faça o log corretamente.

Entendo que kern.* -/var/log/kern.log direciona todos os tipos de mensagens do kernel para o arquivo /var/log/kern.log . No entanto, ao emitir o comando logger -p kern.info "kern.info: test" /var/log/kern.log permanece vazio. Não sei como proceder, pois a mensagem de teste aparece em /var/log/syslog
Seu rsyslog.conf não carrega o módulo de entrada para ler os registros do kernel. A linha relevante está lá, mas está comentada, então o rsyslog a ignora:
$ModLoad imuxsock # provides support for local system logging
#$ModLoad imklog # provides kernel logging support
Remova o # do início da linha imklog e reinicie o rsyslogd.
