Por que estou preso em 640x480 em um sistema de gráficos híbridos Optimus?

Tenho placa gráfica Intel HD 3000 integrada e placa de tecnologia nvidia 520 mx optimus. Eu estava tentando instalar o driver da Nvidia, mas foi falha. Agora eu não posso usar nada. Tem uma resolução 640x480 cada mídia desconectada e eu não consigo conectar

Eu tive esse problema há alguns dias atrás toda vez que eu tentava instalar o driver.

Vá para o terminal e execute o $ sudo nvidia-xconfig
$ sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Procure por

HorizSync 28.0 - 33.0
VertRefresh 43.0 - 72.0

Substituir por

HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0
VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0

Salvar. Reinicie. Vá para Configurações do sistema > > Exibe e seleciona a resolução correta.

Estou usando o Ubuntu 12.04. Isso realmente ajudou a resolver meu problema de tela sendo preso em 640 x 480. Essas duas linhas fizeram o trabalho:

HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0
VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0

Em vez de

HorizSync 28.0 - 33.0
VertRefresh 43.0 - 72.0

Eu tive esses problemas ao tentar definir efeitos do Compiz e instalar a nVidia, então recebi esta mensagem ao tentar iniciar as configurações da nVidia.

Também recebi esta mensagem desagradável:

Could not apply the stored configurations for monitors

Nenhum dos modos selecionados era compatível com os modos possíveis:
