MySQL falha ao conectar-se a partir do localhost com tcp (o soquete do UNIX funciona)

2

Eu tenho o Ubuntu 12.04 executando o servidor MySQL 5.5.24. Eu posso me conectar com mysql --user root -p . status me mostra:

...
Connection: Localhost via UNIX socket
...

Quando tento me conectar com mysql --host 127.0.0.1 --user root -p (ou com --protocol=tcp ), posso conectar-me (recebo uma solicitação), mas qualquer coisa que tentarei fazer me causará este erro:

ERROR 2006 (HY000): MySQL server has gone away
No connection. Trying to reconnect...
Connection id: 39
Current database: *** NONE ***

ERROR 2013 (HY000): Lost connection to MySQL server during query

netstat -pal | grep -P '3306|mysql' mostra:

tcp 0 0 localhost:mysql *:* LISTEN 26535/mysqld

Usando sockets UNIX, consigo trabalhar bem. Alguma idéia?

meu /etc/mysql/my.cnf:

#

#
# You can copy this to one of:
# - "/etc/mysql/my.cnf" to set global options,
# - "~/.my.cnf" to set user-specific options.

# One can use all long options that the program supports.
# Run program with --help to get a list of available options and with

Acabei de descobrir que o processo mysqld falha toda vez que tento conectar-me ao tcp e executar algo. Vejo isso em /var/log/syslog e usei ps -ef para verificar se o PID muda:

Oct 24 16:14:50 desktop /etc/mysql/debian-start[28142]: Triggering myisam-recover for all MyISAM tables

Isto é muito parecido com o log normal quando eu inicio o mysqld, mas eu postei de qualquer maneira no caso de alguém conseguir algo interessante.
