Como posso desenhar o retângulo de seleção na tela para o meu script?

Estou tentando criar um simples script de screencasting. Eu quero obter coordenadas de seleção de tela, desenhando um retângulo vermelho com o mouse. Eu posso usar xdotools para obter coordenadas, mas como posso desenhar um retângulo na tela?

Acabei de encontrar o link e modifiquei o código para me livrar do porco 100% do CPU; parece funcionar bem no Ubuntu 14.04 - basta executá-lo a partir de um terminal, desenhar sua área de retângulo e o programa sairá, imprimindo as coordenadas no terminal:
