Como diagnosticar uma GUI do Ubuntu 16.04 sem resposta?

Praticamente um novato em linux / ubuntu Eu instalei recentemente o Ubuntu 16.04 AMD64 baseado em um disco rígido primeiro instalando-o em um pendrive. O sistema agora é um dualboot com o Win 7 em uma unidade e o Ubuntu 16.04 na outra.

Ocasionalmente (na verdade, quase toda vez que eu uso a interface do usuário) o Ubuntu trava aleatoriamente. Isso parece acontecer independentemente do aplicativo executado. A única consistência parece ser que cada vez que isso ocorre, o Ubuntu estava rodando na GUI padrão (leve?) - desde que eu esteja em um TTY, parece funcionar bem. Como um novato, embora eu geralmente esteja na GUI. Tomei a liberdade de atualizar o kernel seguindo as instruções aqui

A GPU neste sistema é um ASUS 8400EN. O monitor é um Dell 20 ".

O que devo procurar no syslog para diagnosticar este problema?

Seguindo @StandardEye, dei uma olhada no XOrg.0.log. Não há erros relatados. Este sistema usa uma placa P7P55D-E Pro mais antiga ... executando o teclado PS / 2 & rato. O arquivo de log parece identificar o mouse usando um driver do trackpad

Eu olharia /var/log/Xorg.0.log para os erros primeiro, antes do syslog, ao depurar um problema do X Windows.

stores log messages in the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log. This log is 
helpful for diagnosing issues with your X11 environment. 

Enquanto escrevo isto, estou em um sistema Ubuntu 14.04 e não tenho acesso ao meu sistema Ubuntu 16.04. Tanto quanto eu posso dizer, os logs estão no mesmo lugar.
