Não é possível montar o disco rígido externo no Windows e no Linux

Meu irmão tem um problema com seu disco rígido externo (Western Digital 500 GB, sistema de arquivos NTFS), ele não pode ler as coisas nele com seu PC com Windows 7, mas acho que o Windows o reconhece como ele é aconselhado a formate-o.

Eu disse a ele que mostraria o poder do Linux (backtrack 5) e recuperaria seus dados antes de formatá-lo. A coisa é, eu tenho tentado desde há uma semana e acho que não vou a lugar algum.
