Como encontrar a causa da minha perda de pacotes?

Estou usando a Internet da minha universidade. Todas as salas e escritórios estão conectados com o cabo Ethernet através de muitos switches. Muitas vezes eu tenho perda de pacotes, acho que um switch ou modem é problemático. Como identificar a causa? (Eu sei que muitas informações estão faltando, mas me diga o que você precisa saber e atualizarei a questão)
