Como diagnosticar segfaults freqüentes

Meu servidor está registrando falhas frequentes de segmentação em /var/log/kern.log em diferentes ferramentas. Até agora eu os vi em Perl, PHP e rsync. Todos os softwares instalados são pacotes Debian atualizados. Aqui está um trecho do arquivo de log:

Como você pode ver, existem segfaults, uma falha de proteção geral e um Kernel Oops. Meu primeiro palpite foi que há algum tipo de problema de hardware e pedi ao meu Hoster (que é um servidor-raiz alugado) para fazer um hardwarecheck completo - eles fizeram, mas não conseguiram encontrar nenhum problema.

Eu não sei o que e como eles verificaram, mas sua equipe de suporte é geralmente muito boa. Eu corri o memtester e o cpuburn eu mesmo e não encontrei nenhum erro.

Infelizmente, não tenho uma maneira confiável de reproduzir esses segfaults, eles parecem ser mais ou menos aleatórios. Em um palpite eu desabilitei o firewall do sistema e rodei um dos programas que segfaulted regularmente (imapsync) e parecia demorar mais para segfault do que antes, então o problema pode estar relacionado à pilha de rede. Ou pode ser apenas uma coisa aleatória.

Então, basicamente minhas perguntas são:

  1. Como posso diagnosticar isso ainda mais?
  2. Existe algum dado no log acima que possa me ajudar a isolar o causador de problemas?
  3. Há algum problema conhecido com o hardware / software acima que eu ignorei ao procurar por ele?
  4. Existe uma maneira de evitar que o kernel carregue módulos automaticamente (eu provavelmente não preciso de todos esses módulos e um deles pode ser o culpado)

Verifique sua memória!

A causa mais frequente de segfaults aleatórios como este é a má memória. Pegue um verificador de memória (como memtest86 + ) e teste-o.

Coisas para começar ... Verifique a quantidade de memória que o servidor possui. Verifique o tamanho da sua partição de swap. Verifique outros arquivos de log para possíveis fontes de informações (syslog). Verifique se há problemas conhecidos com a versão do kernel e seu hardware atual (ou sistema de virtualização). Estou executando o Debian 6 com este kernel em uma pequena (vmware) vm, sem problemas.

Uma coisa que eu verifico é se o seu provedor de hospedagem usa a chamada "RAM expansível". É bastante comum que hosts baratos tenham alguma RAM base, que pode ser temporariamente expandida. O problema com essa RAM temporariamente expandida é que você não pode confiar nela, já que ela pode ser removida no meio da computação, resultando em um segfault.
