Uso misterioso de memória no Linux

Temos algumas caixas Linux de 64 bits (RHEL6) em execução no Microsoft Windows 2012 Server (Hypervisor) com o mesmo problema. Esses servidores convidados Linux estão sendo executados no MS Windows Cloud (Hyper-V) com 16 servidores hosts com 256 GB de RAM cada um.

Eles começam com o seguinte uso de memória:

A soma da memória RSS reportada por ps em MB é de cerca de 388:

O que mais posso verificar para descobrir o que está consumindo a memória?

Parece que o Hyper-V está roubando a memória porque seu host está superprovisionado, um processo chamado balão de memória (ou memória dinâmica no mundo do Hyper-V).
