Conectando-se ao MS SQL Server usando FreeTDS: Erro 20002: “Conexão do Adaptive Server falhou”

Estou tentando usar o FreeTDS para conectar-me de um servidor Linux (RHEL v7) a um servidor separado que executa o MS SQL Server 2014. No entanto, ao tentar se conectar com o tsql, recebo os seguintes erros (mensagem de erro difere se incluir nome de usuário e senha):

$ tsql -S MYSERVER
locale is "en_US.UTF-8"

Além disso, a execução de tsql -LH não fornece saída:

$ tsql -LH MYSERVER
$

Eu não acredito que o problema seja com um firewall ou qualquer outra coisa no lado do SQL Server, porque:

1. Eu posso fazer telnet para o servidor:

   $ telnet my.server.address 1433
   Trying 11.22.33.444...
   Connected to my.server.address.
   

2. E posso conectar-me com êxito ao SQL Server via ODBC de um laptop (Windows), por meio do utilitário Administrador de fonte de dados ODBC.

apenas remova o caractere especial da senha e tente novamente, eu tenho o mesmo problema e resolvo dessa maneira
