Sim, você desejará remover o cliente MySQL 5.5 para remover os conflitos. Experimente
rpm -e MySQL-client-5.5.20-1.linux2.6.x86_64
rpm -e MySQL-devel-5.5.20-1.linux2.6.x86_64
Eu acho que yum está tendo problemas para instalar o MySQL 5.1 porque já existe uma instalação pré-existente do MySQL 5.5.
Eu queria remover o MySQL 5.5 (tive problemas com o 5.5 com PHP e Python).
Eu removi todas as pastas e arquivos associados ao MySQL 5.5:
yum remove mysql-server
rm -i /usr/bin/mysq*
rm -R /var/lib/mysql/ /usr/share/mysql/ /usr/lib64/mysql/ /usr/include/mysql/
Eu digito find / -name mysql e recebo
/usr/lib64/perl5/auto/DBD/mysql
/usr/lib64/perl5/DBD/mysql
Agora, quando eu tento yum install mysql-server.x86_64 , recebo o seguinte erro:

Verifique se os pacotes mysql foram completamente removidos
yum list installed | grep -i mysql
se algo for encontrado, remova com
yum erase <package-name>
se NÃO houver pacotes restantes instalados. A lista de diretórios que foram enviados como referência conflitante, todos os arquivos que permanecem e, portanto, devem ser removidos!
EDIT: E sim, remova o pacote do cliente MySQL. Isso realmente parece ser o conflito.
