O Instalador PEAR não atualizará

Estou tentando instalar o SOAP no PEAR por meio da linha de comando no Dreamhost. Eu atualizei para a última versão do PEAR (1.9.0), mas quando eu tento instalar o SOAP, recebo o erro:

pear/SOAP requires PEAR Installer (version >= 1.5.4), installed version is 1.5.0

Eu tentei tudo o que posso pensar para atualizar, mas não consigo fazê-lo funcionar. Alguma idéia?

Você pode usar pear upgrade para atualizar o próprio PEAR:

pear upgrade PEAR

ou:

pear upgrade-all

Entre em contato com o Dreamhost e eles dizem que é um problema com a configuração deles:

Ah. Yea. The reason why the version does not match is due to back porting done in the Debian version we're using. I'm not sure if there's a way around that but can create a incident report with our system admin if you'd like. But ultimately, it would be best to install a custom copy of PHP and PEAR in order to install custom modules.
