Tudo isso deve estar relacionado? Se eles são, o que precisa ser feito para corrigir o problema?

O erro acima diz exatamente qual é o problema, mas você afirma que tentou corrigir isso.

O tipo de túnel (L2TP, PPTP, etc) não é o mesmo que o método de autenticação.
Os métodos de autenticação incluem Kerberos, MSCHAP, MSCHAP v2, etc, e é aí que você deve procurar.
Compare as configurações do cliente com as configurações do servidor e você deve ser bom.
