Fechando isto porque foi há 3 anos e não me lembro da solução final.
Li as respostas existentes para este tópico, mas ainda não consigo me conectar. Eu criei uma chave da AWS e salvei na minha pasta ~ / .ssh.
O comando:
ssh -i ~/.ssh/jdrake.pem [email protected] -v

Eu também tentei usuários diferentes (ubuntu, root, jdrake) sem sucesso. Eu estou no OSX.
Nos registros acima, você está se conectando a uma máquina Ubuntu:

Portanto, o nome de usuário padrão para essa caixa será ubuntu , não ec2-user , que é somente para o Amazon Linux.
