Sempre que estou executando o comando sudo service verniz restart ele mostra a seguinte mensagem

Você tem um erro de sintaxe no seu arquivo de configuração. Você precisa consertar isso. 

Expected '.' got 'sub'
program line 98), at
('input' Line 11 Pos 1)

significa que o erro está na linha 11 do arquivo de configuração (usar um editor que exibe números de linha pode ser muito útil): 

  1.  # This is a basic VCL configuration file for varnish.  See the vcl(7)
  2.  # man page for details on VCL syntax and semantics.
  3.  #

Parece que na linha 11. sub vcl_recv { alguém está tentando definir uma sub-rotina VCL dentro de uma especificação de back-end, que não é uma sintaxe válida ...
