ffmpeg com resultados de x11grab em tela preta na reprodução de vlc

Instalei o ffmpeg em uma instância do AWS e não tentei gravar uma sessão X, à qual me conectei pelo x11rdp, com o cliente sendo o Microsoft Remote Desktop.

Aqui está o comando do terminal que estou usando e sua saída:

A abertura de out.mp4 na vlc resulta em uma tela preta.

Eu revi uma série de posts no fórum, bem como, provavelmente, todas as perguntas / respostas em stackexchange e tentei tantas soluções, mas nenhuma parece fazer o truque.

Curiosamente, isto listas de perguntas tentando o seguinte:

$ xwd -root -silent -display :99.0 | xwdtopnm |pnmtojpeg > screen.jpg

Esse comando também funcionou, substituindo $DISPLAY por :99.0 .
