Não consigo buscar chaves GPG por HKPS com o erro “gpgkeys: HTTP fetch error 1: protocol não suportado”

Eu estou tentando buscar algumas chaves GPG sobre keys.gnupg.net e hkps.pool.sks-keyservers.net e ambos falham com:

gpg: requesting key 1F41B907 from hkps server hkps.pool.sks-keyservers.net
gpgkeys: HTTP fetch error 1: unsupported protocol

Estou usando o teste Debian. gpg --version yields gpg (GnuPG) 1.4.16

Por algum motivo, preciso instalar o gnupg-curl para obter suporte SSL sobre o HKP:

This package contains the keyserver helper tools built with libcurl, which replace the ones in the gnupg package built with the "curl shim" variant of gnupg. This package provides support for HKPS keyservers.

A instalação resolveu o problema.
